Senior Lifestyle Solutions (SLS) was founded in Ithaca, NY, in response to a growing need voiced by older residents in our community. Many found themselves in a difficult place—managing well enough on their own, but not yet in crisis, and in need of a new option that could bridge the gap. Traditional home care and senior living facilities often didn’t align, leaving many without the right kind of support.
We created SLS to fill that gap. Our nonprofit offers concierge-style coordination of services that make it possible to remain safely and comfortably at home. From meal preparation and transportation to housekeeping, personal care, and home maintenance, we connect members with local providers and oversee the process to ensure quality and consistency.
Our goal is simple: to make independent living easier, safer, and more sustainable for older adults in Ithaca.
Our team thanks everyone who has expressed interest in and taken time to learn more about SLS. We continue to work hard to develop the concept of delivering concierge-managed services to persons who choose to stay at home as they age.
The business formation process has been moving steadily along. We have a certificate of incorporation as a nonprofit from NYS , an Employee Identification Number; a bank account; several grant and private funding requests pending and committed; have held potential employee interviews; and, submitted an application to the IRS for federal tax exemption.
As we present our project to various audiences, several important questions arise:
Subscription fees are annual. For those joining in Year 1 of SLS’s operation, the fee is $5,000. For those first-year subscribers, subsequent-year subscription fees will continue to be $5,000 with increases pegged to the cost of living. Anyone enrolling after the first year will pay an annual $6,000 fee that rises, again, according to the cost of living in subsequent years. As with any enterprise, the organization reserves the right to change the fee structure.
While there is no specific answer because LTCi policies vary, if they cover care at home, they could provide payment for these services arranged by SLS. The terms of the policy, such as the number of elimination days, number of qualifying activities of daily living (ADL) supports required, will determine what is covered. SLS can assist in exploring this when the need arises. LTCi will not cover household services (e.g., meals, transportation).
One overriding principle in the founding of SLS was that trying to find services and organize things in the heat of a crisis that changes one’s life–either short or long term—is too late. Having a plan is crucial to successful aging. A key goal of SLS is to provide the best services tailored to your needs and preferences when you need them. SLS establishes and updates a profile for every subscriber, so this information is already known and doesn’t need to be discovered when disaster strikes. Your SLS subscription is a year-to-year commitment, so if your circumstances change, e.g., you care facility or move out of the area, you can simply not renew your subscription.
